Jesse Puljujärvi is a Finnish top prospect in ice hockey who was drafted 4th overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
At the beginning of 2016, Puljujärvi was chosen as the Most Valuable Player at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships for players under 20 years old. International interviews revealed that Puljujärvi’s English needed some brushing up.
Delingua coached Puljujärvi before his departure to North America in those areas of the English language in which he struggled the most.
On the basis of the pre-training assessment conducted by our language expert, we determined that the biggest challenges were understanding more wordy spoken English and expressing himself in longer sentences. Puljujärvi also sorely needed to gain confidence in speaking English and add words to his vocabulary.
Different English language situations were practised, and often with the help of ice hockey-related materials. Grammar was revised using customised Finnish ice hockey league cards, and discussion exercises featured different interview situations. Watch Puljujärvi’s first interview in English here.
In just a short time, we managed to improve Jesse’s confidence in speaking English, which has certainly been useful in North America.
